GEO

Generative engine optimization the craft of being cited.

Generative engines write answers instead of listing links — and every answer names its sources. GEO is the craft of becoming one of them. This page explains the term, the mechanics and the method.

The short answer

Generative engine optimization (GEO) is the discipline of optimizing your website and brand for generative AI systems — ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google’s AI Overviews — so they cite you in their answers. The method rests on six building blocks: the core answer at the top of every key page, questions as headings with FAQ schema, an llms.txt introducing your site to language models, visible fresh dates, entity data kept identical everywhere, and authority on sources the systems trust. The same build strengthens classic rankings: one investment, two channels.

Why GEO exists

AI answers follow their own selection logic. Research across large citation datasets shows that over a quarter of ChatGPT’s most-cited pages are invisible in the classic Google top, and fewer than one in ten AI-cited sources also ranks on the first Google page. Meanwhile AI Overviews now appear on nearly half of all searches, and visitors arriving from AI answers convert at over fourteen percent — against under three for classic search. A separate route opened, and GEO is the map.

How generative engines pick sources

Two tracks: trained knowledge and live retrieval. For current or specific questions, the engine consults search indexes, reads candidate pages and quotes the ones that answer directly, verifiably and freshly. The pull towards directness is strong — over four in ten citations come from the first third of a text. Structure, consistency and recognisable authorship carry the rest of the decision.

The six building blocks, applied

One: answer blocks of three to five sentences at the top of every key page. Two: question-phrased headings with FAQ schema underneath. Three: an llms.txt in your root. Four: visible dates, refreshed when content refreshes. Five: entity data — name, place, description — identical across site, profiles and registers. Six: authority beyond your domain, in publications the models read. This is the exact build Ovolum delivers and measures, month after month.

Frequently asked questions

Who coined the term GEO?

The term rose with the 2023–2024 research wave around generative search and spread through the industry from there. Sister terms followed: AEO for answer engines broadly, LLMO for the language model itself, GAIO in the German-speaking market.

Is GEO measurable?

Yes: mentions per AI system on your core questions, AI referrals in analytics, and enquiry quality. We test the question set monthly per system and report the movement.

Can GEO work for small companies?

Especially there: engines reward the best direct answer wherever it lives. A compact site that fully answers its questions beats large domains that talk around them.
