What is iDEAL?

Ask a Dutch customer to pay online and their thumb moves to one button: iDEAL. Understanding this payment habit is step one of selling anything in the Netherlands.

Updated 12 August 2026

The short answer

iDEAL is the Dutch standard for online payments: a bank-to-bank method, launched in 2005 by the Dutch banks, that lets buyers pay directly from their own banking app in seconds. It has long handled the large majority of Dutch online purchases and is fully guaranteed — the merchant receives confirmed payment instantly. iDEAL is currently being folded into Wero, the European payments wallet, which keeps the same habit under a European flag. Payment providers such as Mollie, Adyen and Stripe add it to any webshop in one integration.

Why the Netherlands pays this way

The flow explains the loyalty: choose iDEAL, land in your own trusted banking app, approve with a fingerprint, done. Zero card numbers, zero forms, full familiarity. Dutch e-commerce grew up around this pattern, and credit-card usage stayed comparatively modest as a result — a webshop that opens with a card form reads as foreign to many Dutch buyers, while an iDEAL button reads as home.

iDEAL, Wero and your checkout

The European Payments Initiative is merging national schemes, iDEAL included, into Wero — the transition is gradual and the bank-to-bank habit carries straight over. For merchants the practical advice is stable: offer the local standard first via a payment service provider, keep cards and PayPal beside it for international buyers, and let the PSP absorb the scheme changes. Your checkout stays familiar while the plumbing modernises underneath.

Frequently asked questions

What does iDEAL cost a merchant?

Payment providers typically charge a small fixed fee per transaction — commonly a few tens of cents — which is friendlier than card percentages on most basket sizes. Exact rates sit with your PSP; Mollie and Adyen publish theirs openly.

Do I need a Dutch bank account to accept iDEAL?

A payment service provider handles acceptance and pays out to the business account you hold, in the Netherlands or elsewhere in the SEPA zone. A Dutch business account remains practical for a Dutch BV, but the checkout works either way.

Is iDEAL only for webshops?

It is everywhere money moves online in the Netherlands: invoices with payment links, donations, bookings, QR codes on paper invoices. Service businesses use iDEAL links to get invoices paid dramatically faster — a habit worth copying.
